But, there are a few things to look out for when you’re interested in buying a certain type of piano because of its manufacturer, especially including
Baldwin. I see a lot of people say that they would love to have an authentic grand or upright piano from Steinway or Baldwin, but, don’t realize just how expensive such a piano can cost. Fortunately, there are ways to get a great price on a Baldwin without having to take out loans or find a secondary job.
If you search online for Baldwin prices, you can see most Baldwin’s cost well over $2,000, some of them can be as expensive as $40,000 to $120,000! Of course, price depends on a lot of factors. The biggest being: age, wood, piano type, size, and if the actual model of piano is still manufactured. There are tons of models which are still created by Baldwin, while there’s still many that have limited quantities and are no longer made.
What else incorporates into price? And what should you look out for in a Baldwin? Check out this checklist:
- If you can, always check the date of manufacture for the piano. While the Baldwin company has had a very rich history, there were times when a piano made one decade was better crafted than another in a different decade. For example, a Baldwin piano from the 1970s or 1980s might have some quality problems, whilst a Baldwin that is newer has a higher quality.
- Baldwin manufactured both concert and home grand and upright pianos, although it is disputed which one is of better quality (most think the home upright pianos). This is also important because of dimensions, not just price.
- Uprights were first manufactured by Baldwin, then later on grand
pianos. Thus, the quality between the two are a tad bit different. - Pianos under the Baldwin name do have some minor problems that must be checked for, like bad cabinet alignment, broken keys, some squeaking, and possible loose tuning pins. Make sure to ask of any issues before dropping the cash!

I have a 2008 Baldwin, Exotic Collection hand painted, baby grand piano, by Michael Ethridge. I received it new in 2015 from the Baldwin facility in Ark. It has never been sold or played prior to my taking possession. It has been tuned twice each year, and all components are in excellent condition. Hey John! I would have a tuner come take a look at it, to make sure it will hold a tune, and doesn’t need any repair work. If they think it’s in good shape, $2k is a good price!

hi, a few questions; i’m looking at a baby grand artist series model M, serial no. 339729, is that 1995? what is a fair price for this age and model? second piano i’ve seen i have less info, says it 5 ft, D H Baldwin baby grand, posted for 9600 cdn, high gloss cherry finish. is it different being called D. H. Baldwin? they seem to be very different in price.

Hi Sonia, IF you are looking at a Baldwin M, that is a handmade artist piano made in the United States. Most likely with that year model it was made in Truman Arkansas. The price of that piano varies with how well the piano was maintained and kept up over the years. The D H Baldwin was a piano manufactured by Samick out of Korea. It was made for the Baldwin company and sold as their less expensive performance piano. I would say that is a bit high in price if the piano is on the private market. Hello! This Baldwin was built in 1933. Value depends on a lot of things, most importantly physical appearance and the condition of the piano. The best thing to do would be call up your local tuner to have them give it a look through! The fact that it holds a tune well is definitely a bonus. Another thing you can do is go on Facebook marketplace and Ebay and look at what other Baldwin Ms around that age are selling for. Thanks for the comment!
