Why It’s Important To Learn How To Play Piano

I always wanted to learn how to play piano, but it seemed an impossibility because pianos take up a great deal of space and are expensive. One also needs to have a teacher and that is another heavy financial outlay. But when my kids were old enough, I decided that they should learn and I would also learn along with them. After all, if three people are using the piano, it becomes value for money and a viable investment.

So I decided to put my research in place before forking out the money. There are so many different sizes and kinds of pianos and apart from the conventional ones, which look great, there are also the electronic versions with keyboards. And there is a vast range of used pianos available which are cheaper as well. But I have always viewed the traditional piano with interest and so decided to get the piano. Why is it important to learn to play the piano, you may well ask.

Playing the piano teaches a lot

Discipline is a key factor in how to play piano. You have to make the time to spend with your teacher and also practice regularly. Children especially can use the discipline that piano playing entails. You also have to sit in a particular way which teaches you good posture. Piano lessons teach hand eye coordination, relieves stress and stimulates the mind. It can be done indoors in any weather. Being able to read music is another positive.

For children, mastering the piano can be an activity that will stand them in good stead in later years in high school and university as it will be a valuable skill. Playing music is always appreciated and students who have this skill are sought after. In later life, too, playing the piano encourages social interactions.

Both children and adults who know how to play piano have something to look forward to and piano playing suits both introverts and extroverts. When bored or alone, piano playing cheers you up. Piano playing is also great during celebrations and occasions as it fosters a happy mood. If you are playing with family and friends, they are entertained and you can even have sing-alongs which make for great memories.

Piano playing can be challenging as you expand your repertoire and go from playing easy pieces to more complex and difficult ones. Some classical pieces are quite difficult and if you master them you feel good about yourself. As the piano can be teamed with other instruments, you can actually make great music with other people.

Piano playing can lead to work opportunities

Once you are an accomplished piano player and have learnt how to play piano, you can develop your creative passion. You can find work as a piano teacher, freelancing or teaching in a school or holding one-one lessons, play the piano in orchestras or musical groups, in theater or radio, in shows, in concerts and more. Piano playing is also an outlet for your creative expression.

Piano playing can be a satisfying hobby, add to your skills and help you grow as an individual. And when children learn how to play piano, they also master and hone their abilities which then spill over to other subjects and activities as studies have shown that children who play piano do better academically as well.

As for me, it is not too late to start to learn how to play piano – I do have the rest of my life ahead of me.
