Liberty Theatre

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 4:58:35 PM EST

Where did we come up with the name "Liberty Theatre"?

Liberty Theatre which was located in New Kensington, PA,       across from Cooper Brothers Piano, our original store.
John Phillips Sousa with a note to John Cooper, (second generation) “Stars and Stripes Forever” and played here in the Liberty Theatre in 1929.    We all know the movie, “Gone with the Wind” whose world premier was at the Loew’s Grand Theatre here in Atlanta. After it left the Loews Grand, it came to the Liberty Theatre across from our store.

So, the Liberty Theatre holds a special place in history to the Cooper Family and we wanted to honor that by naming this Recital Hall ...Liberty Theatre.

Thank you Cooper Music

We were impressed by Cooper's professionalism.  Your delivery people were polite and efficient. We were happy with Jon Wunderlich as a tuner.  We had issues with the sutain pedal.  When Jon could not resolve the problem, Bill Schueneman did.  In today's "slip shod" business world--everyone from Cooper was a total professional.    A. Dear Nila:

Gary Ingle joins me in thanking you and the staff at Cooper Piano for generously supplying pianos during the 2009 MTNA National Conference.  Without your support, our conference would not have been such a success.

It was a pleasure working with you and Larry.

Donna,

Our replacement lid for our Petrof was installed today and it looks terrific. Thanks to you and the people at Petrof for taking care of this. I know it was not trivial to get a lid manufactured at the factory in Europe, let alone in the midst of a changeover in distributors. So I really appreciate everyone's efforts.

Regards,

David Schmitt

Do Your Really Know What You Are Buying at College Piano Sales?

Tuesday, January 13, 2009 2:50:27 PM EST

The College-University Piano Loan Program is based on the idea of loaning a number of pianos to the music department of colleges or universities at little or no cost to the institution involved in return for the opportunity to stage a piano sale on the the college campus. Advertisements for the sale give the impression that the university or college is selling the pianos advertised. Generally, the ad is worded to read, “Delivery and financing handled by (name) Piano and Organ.” The point here is the public is often led to believe that they are helping to support the college by purchasing these pianos directly from the college itself, when this is not the case. Many of these ads include, “New and used pianos by Steinway, Baldwin, Young Chang, Kawai, Yamaha, etc.” In reality, they have new pianos by one or two manufacturers and only offer used pianos of the other manufacturers. Ads for many of these sales state, or at least imply, that the pianos offered for at least imply, that the pianos offered for the sales have been used by the college in their music program and therefore, will be sold at substantially reduced prices. Actually, only a small number of pianos are loaned to the college, while a great majority are new showrooms and the pianos are represented as university used pianos, when in reality, they are brand new pianos and in most cases, are definitely not sold at bargain prices. In most cases, pianos that were never used by the school are moved into the college for the sale. Spokespersons for several of the music departments of colleges and universities involved in piano sales in the Southeastern Wisconsin market readily admit that not all of the pianos being offered in conjunction with their school name were actually used by their music students and that additional pianos never used by their school are moved in for the sale. They maintain that the program is beneficial to the school in that companies loan the school new pianos for a year, then sell the pianos along with others and give the school new pianos for a year, then sell the pianos along with others and give the school new pianos for the following year. As one head of a music department said, “It’s a good deal for the college.” He seemed unconcerned that buyers may be misled by the advertisement over his school name. Wisc Better Business Bureau

ATLANTA - Julie Powell of Tucker, Ga., is the proud new owner of a Baldwin upright piano because she knows her car horns. That's right ... car horns.

She qualified for a contest - sponsored by Cooper Music Co. on National Public Radio station WABE 90.1 FM - to win the piano by correctly answering this question: What is the only piece of symphonic music to feature automobile horns? Of course, it is George Gershwin's An American in Paris.

After Julie qualified, her name was drawn from 500 entries by M. Blake Cooper, president of Cooper Music, during a 100th anniversary celebration at the 10,000-square-foot store at 1610 Northeast Expressway. Also on hand for the event was Nick Georgoff, Baldwin regional sales manager.

In addition to the cherry-finish Baldwin Decorator Series piano, Julie also will receive free piano lessons and an hour-long in-home piano concert.
"The lessons and concert are included with all piano sales," Blake says, "so we're including them with this piano, too."

According to Julie, who took piano lessons as a child, she never owned a piano but has wanted one for the past 20 years or so.

She is "thrilled" with her prize and confident that a few "refresher" lessons will have her playing again in no time.

However, this isn't the first time Julie is a prize winner. Two years ago, she won a Macy's gift certificate, which she used recently to purchase new home furnishings. "And now, I have this beautiful piano that looks perfect with my new curio cabinet and oriental carpet," she laughs.

Cooper Music, celebrating 100 years in business this year, is the exclusive Baldwin dealer in Georgia.

A fourth-generation, family owned music business, Cooper Music has been ... and continues to be ... a strong supporter of the arts community in and around Atlanta, Blake says. Because of that, the company has garnered honors for excellent community service, education and marketing from the Keyboard Insights Group, a national music research organization that recognizes the top U.S. music keyboard retailers.

The Baldwin piano contest was the first promotion presented by Cooper Music and WABE, but it won't be the last. In fact, Blake already seems poised for the next contest. "Quick," he smiles. "What was Mozart's favorite hobby?"
